2017 Duke Energy Citizenship & Service Award Individuals who make the commitment to help others are essential links in bringing our communities closer together. The Duke Energy Citizenship & Service Award pays tribute to individuals who use their time, talent and compassion to positively affect the lives of others in their communities or in the workplace. Recipients foster a culture of citizenship and service that acts as a catalyst for others to become involved in civic and social activities. We had the privilege to honor a true corporate leader and public servant. After a 36-year career as President/CEO of Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative, he retired from this position in January. During his tenure, the Cooperative grew from 29,000 members to 66,000, providing power to the state’s most-challenging terrain. Under his leadership, the cooperative created its annual charitable fund-raiser, Blue Ridge Fest, which has produced $2.5 million in net proceeds for local charities since 1998. In addition, he has dedicated his time and energy to serve a number of boards and commissions. He served two terms on the S.C. Highway Commission and was elected chairman during each of those terms. Additional commitments have included chairman of the Better Business Bureau of Upstate South Carolina, Upstate SC Alliance, and membership on numerous other economic-development boards. Further board service includes the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Central Electric Power Cooperative, the Greenville Chamber, Ten at the Top, the Peace Center, the Upstate SC Chapter of Red Cross, and Greenville Health System’s Upstate Affiliate Organization board. And in 2017, he and his wife co-chaired the Upstate American Heart Ball, which raised a record-breaking $1 million. His contributions to his alma mater, Clemson University, have entailed serving on the CU Foundation Board, the school’s Board of Visitors, and as a member of the Alumni Association Board. He has been a member of IPTAY for more than 50 years, serving as its president for 2011-2013. In 2015, Clemson honored him with the university’s Distinguished Service Award. We celebrate 36 years of corporate and community leadership, passion and service. And even in retirement, we expect his servant leadership will continue as referenced in a recent newspaper quote where he stated, “I am pretty sure I do not need to go home and sit down.” Please join us in honoring Mr. Charles Dalton as our 2017 Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award recipient.
